Mara Lubans-Othic – The Salem, Oregon, Farmers
Mara Lubans-Othic is a writer, veteran, and self-taught
cook with an MFA in nonfiction writing from Oregon
State University. She and her husband live on a farm
in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, from which she
writes her blog that focuses on locally and sustainably
harvested produce, dairy, and game meats.
Joan Pratt – CSA - What is That?
Joan Pratt, a retired teacher and apple grower, was one
of the founders of Willow Pond Community Farm CSA
in Brentwood, New Hampshire in 2004. She continues
to be an advocate for local and sustainable food
production and land conservation and presently lives
in Exeter, NH, where she grows about 90% of her own
vegetables almost year-round in her back yard.
Leena Saini – The Kids Cook: Shopping for
Children’s Food Around the World
A former lawyer, after her daughter refused to eat
anything bland as a baby, Leena was inspired to make
baby food better by using spices and diverse global
ingredients. Nurturing tiny taste buds became an
obsession that led to a blog ( www.masalababyfood.
com) and a baby food cookbook “Around the World in
80 Purees: Easy Recipes for Global Baby Food” (Quirk
Books). Leena lives in New Jersey with her husband,
and two “masala babies.”
Michael Saatkamp – A Bowl of Compassion
A devoted food lover and social worker, Michael
decided to follow his vision of making awesome food
accessible for those who can’t afford it. After several
years of extensive travel, he combined both of his
passions and started a soup kitchen in northern India.
His project, A Bowl of Compassion, was later turned
into a primary school for underprivileged children.
Michael shares recipes from the road and charity news

Ruthie Spiero – Israeli Breakfast and the Shuk
Ruthie Spiero was born in The Netherlands and grew
up in Spain and England, where she went to boarding
school for 9 years. She moved to the U.S. in 1998.
She teaches Spanish at the Seacoast Waldorf School
in Eliot, Maine. Her hobbies are reading, writing, and
doing agility exercises with her Border collie. She lives
with her husband and daughter in Portsmouth, New
